Last week we proudly sponsored the Wrap with Love 25th Anniversary Celebration. Wrap with Love is an amazing voluntary organisation working for 25 years to distribute thousands of hand knitted and crocheted blankets worldwide for people in need. They knit and pack blankets for a range of community agencies such as Mission Australia, World Vision, Rotary groups and many other humanitarian organisations, providing to those who need them the most.
Over 3000 volunteers across more than 100 knitting groups meet in homes, libraries, and community centres hand knitting, crocheting, sewing and packing the wraps ready for shipment.
Opened by Councillor Jess Miller on behalf of City of Sydney and Lorde Mayor Clover Moore, the exhibition showcased the wonderful work of the volunteers, traced the history of the organisation and had demonstrations on the work undertaken by the numerous volunteers. Since it's foundation by Sonia Gidley-King OAM 25 years ago, they have made more than 450,000 blankets, accumulated 40 million hours of knitting, 11,900,000 squares and inspired 209 knitting groups across Australia, recruiting more than 30,000 volunteers.
Jayne Goodes summed it up on the night, when she said that the people who go to sleep wrapped by these blankets, will never know who made them, but they go to sleep knowing that they're surrounded by love.
